Community: H. V. Jenkins High School, centrally located in Savannah, is one of seven public high schools whose district encompasses the city of Savannah and outlying areas of Chatham County. Savannah is a small urban port city. The local economy is supported by port businesses, pulp and paper industries, an executive jet company, other support businesses, and the tourism industry. The population of Chatham County is approximately 225,000 residents.

School Information: H. V. Jenkins High School serves approximately 1600 students. However, Jenkins High School has extended its boundaries well beyond the school's district through the Advanced Learning Academy and numerous Special Education Programs. The subsequent student composite is a cross section of individuals from diverse socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds.

Accreditation: Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, and the Georgia Accrediting Commission.

Program Choices/Curriculum: H.V. Jenkins High School offers a comprehensive curriculum intended to address the needs of a very diverse student population. There are two programs of study available to students, the College Preparatory Curriculum, and the Tech Prep Curriculum. Seals of endorsement are available upon successful completion of specific requirements in the respective programs. Students choose one or both programs as a means of meeting the graduation requirements and post-secondary plans.

Graduation Requirements: There are four graduation requirements.
  1. Attend of Savannah-Chatham County Public high school full time for at least one semester and pass all courses for that semester.
  2. Pass all sections of the State of Georgia Graduation Assessment.
  3. Earn twenty-two (22) or twenty-four (24) Carnegie units in a specific program of study as described below. (Various restrictions apply as to how these units can be earned.)
  4. Complete community service requirements of 5 hours per year.
The number of Carnegie units required for high school graduation are shown in the following table which reflects requirements for students entering ninth grade 1997-98 & thereafter. Students earn one-half (0.5) Carnegie unit for successfully completing one course meeting five periods per week fifty minutes per day, for one semester. One-half Carnegie unit equals one semester unit. One Carnegie unit equals two semester units. A 4x4 block schedule was initiated school-wide 2003-2004 school year whereby students receive one (1.0) Carnegie unit for successfully completing one course meeting five periods per week, ninety minutes per day for one semester.
